The Prevention Team of Capital Area Human Services is pioneering “Opioid Misuse & Overdose Awareness,” a comprehensive training for school systems.
On January 11, the first school district to receive the training was East Baton Rouge Parish School System with 80 in attendance, primarily school counselors and the ICARE staff.
The comprehensive training consists of two phases that involve training school social workers and other staff in student support services and nurses and other staff authorized to administer medication during emergencies.
The school training model was developed in partnership with EBR Schools and includes protocols for the emergency administration of naloxone for opioid overdose reversal. CAHS plans to implement the training for other school districts in its seven-parish region.
