CAHS Executive Director Jan Laughinghouse, Ph. D. LCSW-BACS, LAC, CCS, was a featured presenter at the Louisiana Public Health Association’s 74th Annual Education Conference, April 4-5, in Baton Rouge. The conference theme was “Creating a Healthier Louisiana.”
The conference attracted a diverse group of public health professionals to explore public health issues, such as advancements in science, technology, and policy, and to discuss strategies to ensure the health and well-being of Louisianans.
Dr. Laughinghouse was the closing plenary speaker on the first day of the conference, and her presentation, “Mental Health IS Health,” addressed the prevalence of behavioral health issues in Louisiana and how mental health affects physical health.
Dr. Laughinghouse outlined several effective strategies for behavioral health promotion:
- addressing unmet needs among the population
- removing barriers to care
- addressing stigma, discrimination, and equity
- improving access to care
- expanding telehealth services
- integrating mental and physical health care through collaborative care models
