CAHS Executive Director Jan Laughinghouse, PhD, LCSW-BACS, LAC, joined CAHS’ Prevention Division staff at the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren’s 26th annual conference, held in Baton Rouge on April 28.

Dr. Laughinghouse presented “The Grand Rescue: The Opioid Epidemic and the Rise of Grandfamilies,” which explored the correlation between the opioid epidemic and the increasing numbers of grandparents raising their grandchildren.

“Grandparents are some of the most effective family influencers, but they face many issues relative to caregiving responsibilities, societal stigma, and accessing or navigating resources and support,” said Dr. Laughinghouse.

Also at the event, CAHS Prevention Coordinators Dawn Collins and Alicia Richbourg distributed information about opioid misuse, medication safety, bullying, and emotional intelligence. They also provided Medication Record charts.
